Coronado Engagement Photographer | Mother’s Day Proposal + the Ultimate Surprise Party

There are surprise proposals… and then there are Mac-level operations.

As a Hotel del Coronado engagement photographer, I’ve seen some beautifully thought-out moments over the years. But this one? This one had layers. The kind of layers where every time you think the surprises are done, another emotional plot twist walks in wearing sunglasses and trying not to cry.

A month before Mother’s Day, Mac reached out with a vision that immediately felt different from the typical big-production proposal plans. He wrote:

“We’re planning a little family staycation at Hotel del Coronado, and my idea right now is to walk the beach before dinner and pop the question along the way — something simple, but really intentional and personal. I’d want it to feel natural and not staged…”

Immediately, I knew this was going to be good.

Mac and Gabi live in San Diego, so Coronado already feels like that dreamy local escape you don’t have to board a plane for. The kind of place where you slow down without trying. Bare feet in the sand. Salt in the air. Sunset light bouncing off the red turrets of the hotel like a Nancy Meyers movie with better tacos.

And Gabi? She thought the proposal was happening in October.

OCTOBER.

Meanwhile, Mac was over here orchestrating an entire emotional cinematic universe behind the scenes.

The plan started innocently enough: a beach walk before dinner to check out the sand dunes that spell out Coronado from above. Casual. Relaxed. Zero suspicion. We (my husband and I) positioned ourselves at a distance while they wandered along the shoreline near Hotel Del, laughing and talking like it was any other Saturday evening. Except this happened to be Mother’s Day weekend, and then, right there at the top of the dunes, Mac stopped walking and asked Gabi to marry him..

That’s when she realized this wasn’t just a beach stroll.

Cue shock. Cue shaking hands. Cue the kind of confusion that completely takes over someone’s face before they even say yes.

And just when Gabi thought she could catch her breath… surprise number two appeared.

Her parents had secretly flown in from Berkeley and walked up moments after the proposal.

I don’t know what gets me more during proposal photography sessions — the actual proposal or the split second afterward when someone realizes their people are here. It’s the emotional equivalent of getting tackled by love. Gabi went from shocked to sobbing to laughing in about four seconds flat, and honestly? Same.

We spent the next part of the evening wandering around the Coronado dunes for some beach engagement photos, soaking up that soft coastal light and letting everything settle in naturally. One of my favorite things as a San Diego proposal photographer is capturing couples after the adrenaline wears off a little. That’s when the “we’re really doing this” energy kicks in.

We spent the next 30 minutes capturing engagement portraits and family photos in the sand dunes while everyone soaked in the excitement of what had just happened. Honestly, those few minutes after a proposal are always some of my favorites to photograph because nothing feels forced yet. Everyone is still riding the adrenaline and emotion of the moment, which makes the images feel incredibly alive and real.

But Mac still wasn’t done.

Because waiting upstairs on the Sun Deck at Hotel del Coronado?

Thirty of their closest friends.

And the thing that made the whole day unforgettable wasn’t the scale of it. It was how personal every part felt. Nothing was performative. Nothing felt overly staged. It was thoughtful, intentional, emotional, and deeply them.

Exactly what Mac said he wanted from the beginning.
