San Diego proposal photographer | DJ + Kate

There’s something about being a San Diego proposal photographer that feels a little like holding a secret you’re dying to spill—and this one? Worth every second of the wait.

DJ and Kate flew in from North Carolina with a plan… but not the kind you map out down to the minute. More like the kind that unfolds with coastal stops, salty air, and a whole lot of anticipation. They made their first pause in San Clemente, easing into California time, letting the nerves settle just enough before the real moment arrived hours later.

By the time they made their way down to La Jolla, the light was doing that golden, glowy thing San Diego photographers dream about. You know the one. The kind that makes everything feel cinematic, even if you’re just standing barefoot in the sand trying to remember your own name.

From behind the lens, I watched their story play out in real time—but it actually started years earlier, back in college. DJ had noticed Kate right away (as one does), but timing wasn’t exactly on his side. She had a boyfriend, life was doing its thing, and DJ had to file that crush away in the “maybe someday” category.

And then—plot twist worthy of its own rom-com—they broke up. Kate reached out. And just like that, DJ’s “someday” became his everyday.

Six and a half years later, here they were. Living in North Carolina with their two golden retrievers (one still in full puppy chaos mode), building a life that clearly works. The kind where you don’t question it—you just know.

So when DJ suggested a walk along the beach in La Jolla with dinner reservations, Kate had no reason to suspect anything beyond a really good sunset. Meanwhile, I was strategically positioned, camera ready, pretending to be very interested in the ocean while absolutely not missing a second.

And then it happened… just not exactly where he planned.

DJ had every intention of making it to this perfectly perched bench tucked along the coastline. The spot. The one we had discussed weeks in advance. The one that was going to be the place.

But nerves? Oh, they showed up right on cue.

Somewhere between point A and that picturesque bench, DJ started giving off just enough “something’s up” energy to raise suspicion. You know the kind—repeating himself, asking to take a photo over there only to forget seconds later that he just said that, maybe walking with purpose but also… not? Classic almost-proposer behavior.

So he pivoted.

Right there, on the edge of the cliffs in La Jolla—with the ocean stretching endlessly behind them and the light doing its whole main-character thing—he decided this was it. No bench required.

And honestly? Way better.

He stopped. Turned. And got down on one knee.

You could see the exact moment it clicked for her—the shift from “this is a nice walk” to “oh my god, this is the moment.” It’s subtle, but it’s everything. Like watching a light switch flip, but with more emotion and significantly higher stakes. Where everything goes black for a moment and adrenaline rushes in.

As a La Jolla beach proposal photographer, I live for that split second. The inhale before the yes. The laugh-surprise combo that follows. The way time kind of pauses while also rushing forward all at once.

No perfectly planned bench could compete with that kind of real.

She said yes (obviously), and the next stretch of time was filled with that just-engaged glow—equal parts disbelief and absolute certainty. We wandered the coastline, capturing the kind of engagement photos that don’t feel staged or stiff, just real. Wind in her hair, sand on their feet, and DJ looking like the guy who finally got his girl… because he did.

What I love most about photographing proposals in San Diego is how every story feels different, even when the elements are similar. Beach, sunset, ring—sure. But the people? The history? The way it all comes together? Completely one of a kind.

DJ and Kate didn’t just plan a proposal. They created a moment that felt like them—spontaneous, meaningful, and a little bit magical.
