As a Coronado engagement photographer, I can confirm that some beach proposals require a camera, a very convincing hiding spot, and, in this case, pretending to journal in a sand dune like a woman who had suddenly become extremely interested in her own thoughts.
Cameron and Vy had been together for more than two years after meeting on Hinge, so when Cameron reached out to plan their proposal, he already knew one thing: this had to be a surprise.
And Vy is a little bit of a control freak. Affectionately, of course. She likes to know what’s happening, which made secretly planning a proposal around her a delightful logistical challenge. Cameron had to use his work phone to communicate with me so there would be no suspicious texts popping up where she might find them.
Our plan was a quieter stretch of Coronado beach, tucked into the sand dunes near Hotel del Coronado. Private enough to feel intimate, beautiful enough to feel like the place, and far enough from the crowds that Cameron could actually ask the question without acquiring an accidental audience.
My job was to disappear.
Or, more accurately, to look like I had absolutely nothing to do with them.
So I parked myself in a nearby sand dune with my camera and attempted to look like someone casually journaling on the beach. Because nothing says “I am definitely not hiding here to photograph a surprise proposal” quite like sitting alone in the sand, scribbling away as if I had just been struck by a profound thought about the ocean.
Then Cameron proposed.
And Vy was completely, wonderfully shocked.
The kind of shocked where your brain needs a minute to catch up with what your eyes are seeing. She looked like she genuinely couldn’t believe this was actually happening. Cameron was proposing. There was a ring. This was real. They were getting engaged.
And then came the giggling.
They giggled through practically the entire session.
Not a polite little laugh here and there, either. Full-on, can’t-stop-smiling, we’re-really-doing-this giggles. The kind that kept bubbling up every time they looked at each other.
Honestly, I could have photographed that energy all night.
Once the initial shock wore off—or at least settled into happy disbelief—the two of them relaxed into the moment. There was laughing, hugging, admiring the ring, more laughing, and all those tiny in-between interactions that make engagement photos feel like them instead of a collection of poses.
As a proposal photographer in Coronado, those are the moments I’m really after. Not stiff poses or perfectly serious faces. I want the tiny in-between things: the way you grab each other when you’re excited, the private joke that makes you both lose it, the look that says holy crap, we’re engaged.
Cameron and Vy are also major foodies and serious beach lovers, so their evening had a very appropriate sequel. Their ongoing mission has been to chase the sunset together, although they have apparently developed a talent for missing it.
Not this time.
After I left them, they still had about 45 minutes of sun so I hope that they finally got their glow. Afterwards, they headed to Nobu Coronado nearby for dinner, just the two of them, newly engaged and presumably ready to celebrate over very good food.
A pretty fantastic ending to a very well-kept secret.
