Coronado Engagement Photographer | The Sweetest Shell Hunt Proposal in the Sand Dunes

As a Coronado engagement photographer, I thought I knew where this evening was headed. Cute proposal photos. Sunset in the dunes. Maybe a champagne toast if we were lucky.

What I did not expect was to become emotionally attached to seashells.

Josh and Maya were in Southern California with their families celebrating their niece’s 8th grade graduation — and not casually either. We’re talking valedictorian status. Tiny overachiever icon. The whole family had gathered early in Coronado to celebrate, spending time together near the beach and making a full vacation out of it.

Meanwhile, Josh was out here secretly planning a beach proposal detailed enough to qualify as a covert operation.

Everyone knew.

Parents knew.

Siblings knew.

I knew.

Maya? Absolutely not.

And the funniest part? Maya was already convinced the wedding proposal was happening the night before. Apparently Josh had hyped up the previous evening so much that she spent the entire night internally preparing herself to get engaged… only for absolutely nothing to happen. Just emotional cardio for no reason. Meanwhile Josh was probably fighting for his life trying not to give the real surprise away.

So by the next day, Maya had no clue she was actually walking straight into a proposal on the beach in Coronado.

Which made her reaction even better.

As a San Diego engagement photographer, I see a lot of beautiful setups. But this one felt deeply personal in a way you can’t fake with Pinterest boards and rented décor. Maya absolutely loves collecting shells, so Josh had the family help create a trail of seashells through a secluded corner of the Coronado sand dunes. But these weren’t just shells tossed in the sand for aesthetics.

Each one had a sentimental photo attached to the back.

Tiny snapshots of their life together.

Little breadcrumbs leading her straight into forever.

Her sister and I were waiting quietly at the end of the trail — her sister videotaped while I photographed the whole thing unfolding in real time. Josh and Maya walked up together, and the second she rounded the corner, it clicked for her what was happening, and she completely lit up.

Not delicate single-tear movie crying.

Full-body excitement.

Jumping up and down.

Repeating how excited she was over and over again.

The kind of joy that takes over your whole nervous system.

Honestly, it was impossible not to smile behind the camera.

At the end of the shell trail, Josh had champagne waiting in the dunes alongside chocolate-covered strawberries, cookies, and handwritten stories about their relationship for Maya to keep forever. Not just a quick note either — actual memories and moments from their life together written down intentionally so she could reread them years from now. Not performative. Not flashy. Just honest and sentimental in the way that sneaks up on you and punches directly through your rib cage.

And somehow, knowing how they met makes the whole thing even better.

Years ago, both Josh and Maya were living in San Diego while Maya was in college and Josh was playing professional hockey. They met at a bar in Pacific Beach. Josh noticed one of Maya’s friends bent over and thought she might be sick, so he stepped in to help. Maya immediately rushed over to fend him off like the protective queen she is… only to later admit he was actually kinda cute.

Which honestly feels like the most believable modern love story possible. A little chaos. A little misunderstanding. Immediate chemistry.

And now here they are, years later, getting engagement photos barefoot in the Coronado dunes, sand between their toes and promising forever while their family quietly celebrated nearby.

As a Coronado beach proposal photographer, these are the moments I love documenting most. The genuinely personal ones. The wedding proposals filled with tiny details that mean everything to the people inside them.

And from now on, I’ll never look at seashells the same way again.
