As one of those San Diego family photographers who has seen every shade of navy under the sun, I can tell you this: warm tones are a breath of fresh, salty air. Seriously, if I had a dollar for every family that showed up in cool blues and whites, I could probably buy a beach bungalow in La Jolla (okay, maybe just the doormat).

But when the Roach family strolled up in these gorgeous warm tones—hello, terracottas, soft rusts, and buttery neutrals—I did a tiny happy dance inside. Not only did it pop beautifully against the soft, sandy tones of their La Jolla beach backdrop, but it gave the whole session a golden glow that felt like a warm hug in photo form.

Here’s the thing about San Diego family photography: you can absolutely lean into those cool coastal vibes, I absolutely love them. But you can also switch it up and bring the heat. Warm, earthy tones? Or my favorite, deep vibrant jewel tones? Yes please. Especially when you’re working with light as dreamy as what we get on the beach here in San Diego.

The Roach family lives in beautiful La Jolla (jealous? Same), so we kept it simple and headed to a nearby beach spot for their shoot. No long drives. No fuss. Just the ocean, some kids with major personality, and a little bit of golden hour magic.

Now, a quick note about Dad. The last time this family hired me—yep, they’re repeat clients (cue my heart swelling)—Dad was totally game for joining in. This time? Not so much or too busy…Im not sure which. And listen: that’s okay. Dads, we love you, but if you’re not feeling the camera vibes every single year, that doesn’t mean the show can’t go on.
