As a San Diego proposal photographer, I get to witness a lot of suspicious behavior. Nervous pacing. Secret phone calls. Someone suddenly becoming VERY interested in the weather.

Ian kept saying, “It’s so beautiful out today”, repeatedly.

Then: “Why don’t we stop by the beach?”

Rachel had a sneaking suspicion something was up. Ian was rushing her out the door before she’d even had a chance to do her makeup, which is not exactly how you behave when you’re casually going to the beach. I mean, sir. Let the woman put on mascara.

Yes, it was a beautiful morning. This is San Diego. Beautiful weather is kind of our thing. But when your boyfriend suddenly becomes a tourism ambassador for the Pacific Ocean, you may reasonably begin to wonder what’s going on.

What Rachel did not know was that there was a whole family secret mission underway. Her parents and sister, Ian’s parents, and his brother had all flown into San Diego the day before and were basically participating in a highly coordinated covert operation.

Rachel and Ian met in business school in January 2024, then really hit it off on a school ski trip to the Alps. Because apparently nothing says “potential lifelong relationship” like discovering you like someone while wearing approximately six layers of clothing and navigating European ski slopes.

They started dating shortly after and, a couple of years later, found themselves standing in La Jolla with a much bigger secret than Rachel realized.

Rachel and Ian had already done the hard part: moving across the country, navigating seven months of long distance, and finally getting Ian back to San Diego three months ago. But apparently Ian decided that wasn’t enough plot development. He needed a ring. And an audience. Rachel had requested her family be there and Ian delivered.

The beach proposal happened near the thatched hut in La Jolla, with the kind of coastal scenery that makes my job feel suspiciously unfair.

Ian proposed, Rachel said yes, and then came the part she really wasn’t expecting.

Her entire family—and his—came running down the hill to greet them.

They had been hiding behind some street workers’ trucks nearby, waiting for their cue.

Watching Rachel realize what was happening was one of my favorite parts of the entire morning. First the proposal. Then the shock. The realization that her parents had somehow managed to fly across the country without blowing the secret.

That’s the magic of photographing proposals. You get to witness the exact second someone’s brain catches up with their heart.

From Surprise Proposal to La Jolla Engagement Photos

After the hugs, happy tears, congratulations, and the inevitable “Let me see thing ring!” conversation, champagne flowed and happy family portraits ensued.

Then came the fun part: just Rachel and Ian playing on the beach together while I photographed their engagement session around La Jolla.

We walked, talked, laughed, and let them settle into that strange and wonderful newly-engaged feeling. No stiff posing. No “okay, now look lovingly into the distance.” Just the two of them enjoying the fact that they were officially doing this.

And that’s one of my favorite things about being a La Jolla proposal photographer. The beach proposal itself lasts a few minutes. The photographs afterward give you the whole story—the people who traveled to be there, the champagne, the sandy feet, the ridiculous amount of smiling, and that first little stretch of time when everything suddenly feels different.

For couples searching for photographers in San Diego, La Jolla is hard to beat. You get the coastline, the cliffs, the beach, gorgeous morning light, and plenty of room for a surprise plan that can involve an entire undercover family operation.

Rachel and Ian’s proposal had all of it.

A secret. A ring. Six family members hiding behind trucks. A whole lot of happy, giddy excitement.

And, eventually, a very good reason to pop champagne.
