What to wear for a mesmerizing underwater photo session

An underwater photo session is a unique way to celebrate your inner mermaid. It’s an ethereal experience, and we’ll capture you in a weightless environment where the laws of gravity don’t apply. (And hey, if you have  a mermaid tail and want to wear it, we’re open to that.)

Can you swim?

Before we go any further, we have to ask: Can you swim? Can you dive at least six feet deep and hold your breath for 30 seconds? If you can’t, let’s talk about an above-the-surface photo shoot near the water instead. Or we could photograph you at the surface of the ocean or in the shallow area of a pool.

Wear light, flowing clothing.

It’s time to flaunt your love of mermaids or water nymphs. Go for that gauzy white ankle-length dress. It will float and look luminous underwater. You can also try bright colors that contrast with the blue of the water.

Feathers and sequins, oh my!

Be aware of any feathers or sequins on your clothes. They tend to float away underwater.

Are you covered?

While the aforementioned white gauzy dress will look heavenly underwater, it will also be revealing, so make sure your nipples are covered. If you’re wearing a white top, you might want to invest in a white bikini. Magenta dress? Pink bikini top. You get the idea.

Forget the hairspray.

You’re going underwater, and your hair will be flowing behind you. The only thing hairspray will do is get in your eyes and turn your beautiful tresses into a matted mess.

Water washes out color.

The blues of water tend to wash out skin tones, so you’ll want to wear bright lipstick. (Trust us—it may seem like a lot above the surface, but it will look great in the photos.) A little waterproof mascara is also a good idea. You’re welcome to try out other waterproof makeup, but remember that most “waterproof” makeup is designed for an afternoon workout, not a plunge in a swimming pool. So please try out your waterproof makeup before our photo shoot—we want to spend our valuable time taking photos, not wiping ill-behaved makeup off your face!
