A beautiful San Diego proposal is exactly what unfolded at Sunset Cliffs—one of those rare moments where timing, place, and people line up like they’ve all been practicing for years. From behind my camera, I watched it all click into place, literally and metaphorically.
Steven and Jennifer first crossed paths ten years ago at a soccer camp—back when neither of them knew they were meeting someone who’d eventually change the entire trajectory of their lives. They both went to school at Point Loma Nazarene University, perched right above Sunset Cliffs itself. It became their shared backdrop: she, the sharp-minded engineering student who somehow made being a social butterfly look effortless; he, the calm, intentional presence who paid attention to everything that mattered.
For the San Diego proposal, Steven didn’t just plan—he engineered his own moment of brilliance. He invited both sets of parents, plus all the siblings, and then instructed them to hide. Not casually hide, but strategically tuck themselves into the cliffs with congratulatory signs ready to reveal like a slow-motion ta-da from afar. The whole operation had the precision of a stakeout, but with way more love and significantly better signage.
All day long, the sky brooded. Clouds everywhere. I was ready for moody, ready for dramatic, ready for what happened next. Steven dropped to one knee. No dramatic light show. No cinematic glow. Just the honest, quiet moment he’d been carrying in his heart for years. Both of them welled up instantly—those real, can’t-stop-them tears that come from something deeper than surprise. The kind that make you forget the rest of the world is even there.
Parents and siblings rose from their hiding spots in a carefully choreographed reveal, holding their congratulatory signs high. There was cheering, waving, the kind of celebratory energy that carries across the wind without ever needing to be loud. It was support, pride, and love—visible, but not intrusive. Close, yet thoughtful enough to let the moment still belong entirely to Steven and Jennifer.
After the hugs and the family portraits, We walked around for some improptu engagement photography. Then the sky decided to open. Suddenly, light spilled across the cliffs—peach, gold, warm, unreal. It was like the day had been holding its breath and finally exhaled.
