San Diego Proposal Photographer | Sadie & Josh’s Oceanfront Plot Twist

As a San Diego proposal photographer, I can tell you this: sometimes the best love stories involve a little fate, a hurricane, and a photographer yelling about a dolphin that absolutely was not there.

Allow me to introduce you to Sadie and Josh.

Before San Diego, before the ring, before the whole wait, is this actually happening? moment, there was Memphis.

Josh had just moved downtown when he met Sadie. And apparently, one meeting was all it took to put her on his radar. He started seeing her around town, too. You know how it goes. One minute, you’re grabbing a drink, and the next, you’re suddenly very aware of who else might be grabbing a drink in the same neighborhood.

Josh had his eye on Sadie, so to speak. Then came the repeated run-ins, the growing connection, and eventually, two years of dating.

Somewhere along the way, their story became the kind you hope gets a really good next chapter. Preferably one involving a ring.

The Florida Proposal That Wasn’t Meant to Be

Josh had a plan. A Florida proposal, sunshine, and a big moment to ask Sadie to marry him.

Then a hurricane decided to have other ideas.

Florida was officially foiled, but Josh wasn’t about to let a little meteorological chaos derail the entire operation. He’d been dreaming about Mexico or San Diego anyway, and with the original trip off the table, he pulled together a last-minute getaway to San Diego instead.

A spontaneous trip? Romantic.

A proposal plan that requires quick thinking? Even better.

There was just one small logistical issue: Sadie couldn’t be completely in the dark about why they were suddenly heading to the coast. So Josh told her he’d arranged a professional photoshoot.

Which was true! Technically.

She knew professional photos were happening. She did not know exactly what was about to happen during them. Although, based on the suspicions she was already having, I don’t think Josh was getting away with quite as much as he hoped.

One Backpack, One Ring, and One Very Convenient Dolphin

As a San Diego photographer, I love the photos you see. But I also love the little bits of behind-the-scenes chaos that make a proposal story worth telling.

Josh had the ring, but he couldn’t keep it in his pocket. The box would’ve given the whole thing away, and subtlety was suddenly a very important part of this operation.

So we came up with a plan.

I’d ask Sadie to turn around for a photo from the back. That would give Josh a moment to grab the ring from his backpack without her seeing him do it.

Simple enough, right?

Except that I also needed to keep Sadie occupied.

Enter: the dolphin.

At precisely the right moment, I yelled, “THERE’S A DOLPHIN!”

Was there a dolphin? No comment.

Did Sadie turn her attention toward the ocean? Absolutely.

And while she was looking for our very imaginary marine friend, Josh was getting ready to ask the real question.

This is the kind of thing you can’t manufacture in a perfectly posed portrait session. It’s the nerves, the secret coordination, the split-second decisions, and the fact that sometimes a San Diego photographers job involves equal parts camera skills and highly questionable wildlife announcements.

One Question. A Whole New Chapter.

With the ring finally in hand, Josh could focus on what he’d come to San Diego to do.

After two years of dating, countless Memphis run-ins, a canceled Florida trip, and a last-minute California detour, it all came down to one question.

And this is my favorite part of being a professional photographer. I get to witness the split second when a plan becomes a memory. The nerves. The looks. The realization that this is actually happening.

As a La Jolla photographer and San Diego engagement photographer, I love creating space for those real moments to happen. Not every proposal needs an elaborate setup or a perfectly choreographed production. Sometimes you need a beautiful stretch of coastline, a little strategic planning, and the willingness to yell about a dolphin.

Sadie and Josh’s story began on the river in Memphis. Their engagement brought them to the Pacific. And somewhere between those two bodies of water, they found their next chapter.

Florida may have been canceled. The dolphin may have been imaginary.

The love story? Very real.
