The Cost family needed a break—and not just the “sleep in and skip emails” kind. On the morning of their San Diego family photography session, we met up at the beach in La Jolla for their family portraits, and—classic coastal mood—it was raining. Not pouring, but misty enough to make you wonder if you should’ve brought a backup plan. Both parents are physicians at a busy hospital in Colorado, and after the nonstop intensity of the last few years in healthcare (you already know), they were overdue for something that felt like an exhale. A real-deal, toes-in-the-sand, watch-the-sunset kind of break. And it’s raining.
But here’s the thing about San Diego weather: if you don’t like it, give it 20 minutes. And sure enough, by the time we got started, the clouds rolled back, the skies opened up, and the beach looked like it had been waiting for us all along. Cue the golden light and that perfect post-rain glow that makes everything feel cinematic.
The Cost family leaned right in. Barefoot in the sand, jackets tossed aside, and that peaceful “we made it” kind of energy that’s hard to fake. These were not just family portraits in La Jolla—they were a celebration. Of weathering hard years. Of carving out space for joy. Of being together, uninterrupted, in one of the most beautiful places on the West Coast.
Also, a PSA for anyone stressing about weather for their beach shoot: don’t. If it rains in San Diego, it’s usually brief—and it almost always clears into something beautiful. The kind of light you wish you could bottle.

Thinking about booking some San Diego Family Photography?
Whether you’re planning a sun-soaked family vacation, celebrating a major milestone (like senior portraits, an anniversary, or finally getting everyone in the same place at the same time), or you just want to hit pause and soak in this season of life—there’s no better backdrop than the beach. And no better time than now.
Maybe your kids are growing faster than you can keep up with. Maybe you’ve been through a few hard years and are finally stepping into a little joy. Maybe you’ve never had professional photos that actually look and feel like your real life. You deserve that. The sandy hugs. The windblown hair. The goofy laughs and quiet in-between moments that usually slip by unrecorded.
That’s what I’m here for.
I’m not about stiff poses or forced smiles—I’m a natural light photographer who captures your family the way you are when you’re just being you. Whether it’s overcast, sunny, or doing that weird San Diego marine layer thing, we’ll make magic. Clouds or sunshine. Always real.
So if you’re even thinking about scheduling a beach session in San Diego—at La Jolla, Windansea, Coronado, or wherever your heart leads you—don’t wait. Let’s tell your story in a way that feels honest, effortless, and a little bit unforgettable. Let’s make it happen.
