When the Moegling family invited me to photograph the christening of their new sailboat, I thought, sign me up! A day near the water? Capturing joy, family, and the promise of new adventures? Yes, please. As a San Diego family photographer who loves a little nautical flair, I couldn’t wait to help them document this milestone.

The day was pure Southern California magic—blue skies, a gentle breeze, and the kind of sunshine that makes everything feel like a scene from a movie. Friends and family gathered at the marina to celebrate the newest member of the family: a sleek, shiny sailboat ready for its maiden voyage.

The boat gleamed in the sunlight, practically begging to be photographed. The christening itself was a beautiful moment, with a bottle of champagne smashed against the hull (a tradition that’s as fun to photograph as it sounds) and cheers erupting from everyone.

As a San Diego family photographer—and, apparently, a boat photographer now—I live for moments like this. Watching families celebrate milestones, surrounded by the people they love, is what makes my job so special.
