Pacific Beach Photography | Tradition of Sun, Sand, and Sweet Chaos

Pacific Beach photography sessions aren’t always about perfect sunsets and picture-postcard skies. In fact, the morning of these family beach photos, the sun took the day off—and honestly, it was kind of perfect. Cloudy skies, cool air, and the softest light you could ask for. No squinting, no sweating, and plenty of space to run wild.

Every year, Marci and her family make the trip from Arizona to San Diego. It’s tradition. It’s escape. It’s one of those things they always make time for—right up there with beach walks and probably breakfast burritos. And lucky me: I got to photograph them this year.

Marci is the glue, the planner, the one who makes this whole memory-making machine hum. Her dad, Mert—88 still sharp as ever—joins them every time. He used to work in staffing and talks about it with a kind of reverence most people save for vintage cars or baseball. He misses the people, the camaraderie, the buzz of being part of something bigger. And even though he’s officially retired, you can tell he’s still got it. A natural connector.

Her two kids, Major (8) and Brinlee (5), brought the energy. And by “energy,” I mean I definitely got my steps in. Major loves animals (and possibly also sprinting at full speed across the beach), and Brinlee? She’s five going on fabulous—obsessed with mermaids, the ocean, and twirling in whatever direction the wind blows.

We kept things simple. That’s how I always roll with family beach portraits in San Diego—no props, no stress, just coordinated outfits, nice people, sand, and a camera. I did bring a beach blanket (my secret weapon) so the siblings could have a cozy moment together. That turned into one of my favorite shots: the two of them eskimo kissing, laughing and half-wrestling in that way only siblings can.

This is what I love about Pacific Beach family photography. It doesn’t need to be flashy. It just needs to be real. Real connection, real moments, real joy—even on a gray morning in June.
