If you’re searching for a lifestyle photographer San Diego who can handle a little chaos (read: wind, kids, and a lot of moving parts), this one’s for you.
Because this session? It had all of it.
The masterminds behind it were the grandparents—clearly the kind who understand that getting everyone together in one place is no small feat. Six adults, four kids (ages 8, 8, 5, and 4), and one shared goal: document this season of their family while everyone is still close, still little, still this version of themselves.
We met on the beach in Coronado, near the iconic Hotel del Coronado and the ever-reliable sand dunes that San Diego family photographers keep coming back to.
Now let’s talk about the real guest of honor:
The wind.
Not a gentle breeze. Not a “this will add a little movement” situation. No. This was full-on, hair-has-a-mind-of-its-own energy. The kind where you’re pretty sure no strand will stay where it’s supposed to for more than half a second.
There was a moment—early on—where we all silently wondered, are we fighting a losing battle here?
Spoiler: we were not.
Because here’s the thing about being a San Diego photographer for candid family sessions: perfection is overrated. Movement? Way more interesting.
We leaned into it.
Hair blowing? Great. Dresses catching the wind? Even better. Kids running slightly off-course because the sand is shifting under their feet? Perfect.
We started with the full group—everyone together, which, with four kids and wind like that, is basically an Olympic event. But they showed up. Arms linked, hands held, laughter already breaking through the “okay everyone look here” phase.
And then something shifted.
Instead of trying to control the moment, they let it happen.
The kids ran forward together, kicking up sand, pulling the adults along with them. Grandparents right in the middle, smiling like they knew this—this exact chaos—was the whole reason they planned it.
Click.
That’s the shot.
As a lifestyle photographer in San Diego for extended families, those are the frames I’m chasing. Not the perfectly still lineup (though yes, we got that too). The ones where everyone is moving, laughing, slightly off-balance, completely themselves.
We broke into smaller groups—each family unit, grandparents with grandkids, a few quieter moments tucked between the gusts. Hair still doing whatever it wanted, but by then? No one cared.
Because the connection was louder than the wind.
The dunes gave us that soft, textured backdrop that keeps everything grounded, while the sky stayed bright enough to wrap the whole scene in that classic coastal glow. And somehow—despite the odds—everything came together.
The photos? They worked.
More than worked.
They felt alive.
By the end, there was sand everywhere, hair in places it didn’t start, and a family that had fully leaned into the moment instead of trying to control it.
And that’s always where the magic is.
