Dogs Aren’t Just Pets—They’re Basically the Favorite Child (And yes, they absolutely come on vacation too.) The Dobson family booked a session for family photography Coronado Beach with a lifestyle beach photographer (hi, that’s me!) to capture this fleeting, unforgettable time in their lives. They flew in from Chandler, Arizona for their son’s soccer tournament in San Diego, they could’ve just done the usual—check into the hotel, hit the field, grab some pizza between games, call it a win. But instead, they decided to turn it into something bigger. Something a little magical.
I’m a beach photographer (the one with sand in my shoes and a camera that never quits) and love to capture this unforgettable, blink-and-it’s-gone season of life. And when they showed up to the shoot, sun-kissed and smiling, they brought someone extra special with them: their dog.
And not in a “we couldn’t find a sitter” way. In a “this dog is family” way.
Which, as a San Diego beach photographer who adores four-legged co-stars, made me ridiculously happy. Dogs are the ultimate ice-breakers. They calm the nerves, steal the spotlight, and bring a whole new level of energy to every session. Kids relax. Parents stop stressing. And suddenly, you’re not posing for the camera—you’re just being, together, in a way that’s real and honest and a little bit sandy.
Let’s be honest: family photos can sometimes feel like a high-stakes operation. Coordinated outfits, sunset timing, “Smile! No, really smile!” stress. But throw a dog into the mix and guess what? The pressure melts. Because no one’s worried about looking perfect when the dog is trying to photobomb your shot or chase the waves like they’ve got unfinished business with the Pacific.
The Dobsons got that. They leaned all the way in. We ran barefoot on the beach and let the ocean do what it does best—remind us to stop taking life (and photos) so seriously. Their pup sprinted down the shoreline like it was his job. Their kids laughed like kids should. And together, we froze those little in-between moments in time—the kind that don’t usually make the holiday card, but definitely make the heart squeeze.
Because here’s the thing: family isn’t just the people under one roof. It’s the whole crew. The ones who wait by the door, wagging their tails. The ones who are part chaos, part comfort, and 100% part of the story.
So if you’re headed to San Diego for vacation, for a soccer tournament, or just for a change of scenery—bring your whole family. Furry ones included. I’ll be here, camera ready, capturing your family beach portraits the way they deserve to be remembered: salty, joyful, and full of love.
