Being a family photographer Coronado or San Diego based feels a little like having a front-row seat to time doing its thing—slow, unstoppable, and somehow always landing us right back on the same beaches, watching everyone show up a little older, a little louder, and a lot more themselves.
This family and I go back about 17 years on the beaches of Coronado, CA and sometimes Pacific Beach. Seventeen. Years. That means I’ve photographed scraped-knee toddlers, sun-drenched elementary school giggles, and now—somehow—two twin girls standing in front of my camera as full-on high school seniors. If that doesn’t mess with your perception of time, I don’t know what will.
There was a long gap between sessions, the kind that happens when life is busy and kids are growing faster than calendars can keep up with. One day they were about 6 or 8 years old, running down the beach like they owned the shoreline, and the next thing I know, I get the message: “They’re seniors now. We’d love to come back to Coronado.”
And just like that, we picked up right where we left off.
Except everything was different.
As a San Diego senior portrait photographer, I get to see a lot of “this is such a big moment” energy. But this one hit differently because it wasn’t just about senior portraits. It was about continuity. About showing up again in a place that already holds so many versions of this family.
We built the session in layers. First, individual senior portraits for each twin—two completely distinct personalities that somehow share the same DNA and the same ability to make me laugh mid-shoot. One is all quiet confidence and soft expression; the other brings just enough edge and sparkle to keep things interesting. Classic twin energy, upgraded. And then a few of the bestie who tagged along, because why not?!
Then we shifted into generational family portraits, which is where everything softened in a different way. Mom, the twins, and grandma—standing together on the Coronado beach where we’ve been returning for years. That’s the kind of frame you don’t rush. You don’t over-direct it. You just let it exist.
Grandma especially has always been part of this story in a steady, grounding way. Seeing her there, watching her granddaughters step into this almost-adult version of themselves, felt like one of those quiet full-circle moments you don’t always realize is happening until you’re already in it.
The beach itself hasn’t changed much over the years. That’s the funny thing about Coronado—it holds steady while everything around it shifts. Same light. Same ocean rhythm. Different seasons of life unfolding in front of it.
That’s what makes being a family photographer Coronado-based for so long feel less like a job and more like keeping visual notes in a very long, very meaningful story. Not every client returns after years. Not every story gets to pause and restart like this one did.
But when it does?
