She Said Yes in the Sand Dunes | Coronado Proposal Photographer

Coronado proposal photographer here, reporting from one of the best-kept secrets for popping the question in San Diego: the sand dunes near the Hotel Del Coronado. It was one of those mostly cloudy evenings where the sky looked dramatic in the best way—like nature was quietly setting the stage.

Anthony had a plan. Allison had a pretty strong hunch. He tried to keep the proposal a secret. He did. But after six years together, Allison can read him like a book.

From Host Stand to Forever

Back in Illinois, they met while working as hosts at the same restaurant. Somewhere between seating tables and cleaning menus, they became inseparable. Since then, they’ve weathered long hours, big moves, and nursing school (which Allison tackled like a total boss). Through it all, they stuck together.

And just recently? They traded the Midwest for the West Coast—making San Diego home.

So naturally, Anthony decided to pull off a surprise proposal in Coronado—The setup was tucked in the dunes near the Hotel Del: a woven rug, beachy florals, and the kind of detail that says, “Someone really thought this through.” (Spoiler: Anthony recruited Allison’s sister and her crew, who pulled it off like pros.) and then added me (their very ready San Diego engagement photographer).

When the Setup Is “Too Perfect”

Anthony played it cool… ish. He had a cover story: sightseeing in Coronado with two close friends visiting from Illinois. Just a casual day near the Hotel Del. No big deal.

Except Allison caught on. Too many little hints. Too many outfit comments. Too much… trying not to try too hard.

But she went with it.

Meanwhile, her sister and family were already on the beach—setting up a blanket-and-floral scene in the dunes that looked like a laid-back magazine shoot. And I was lurking nearby with a camera and my best “nothing to see here” face.

A Cloudy Sky, a Rug in the Sand, and One Very Good Decision

Anthony led Allison over. She saw the rug, the flowers, and the exact moment his nerves gave it away. He got down on one knee.

She laughed. She giggled. She said yes.

And then—cue the running feet—her family came out of hiding to celebrate. Big hugs. Happy laughter. The good kind of chaos. Oh, and the two friends from Illinois? They were in on it the whole time, too. Because what’s a surprise proposal without a team effort?

Real Life > Perfect Weather

As a Coronado engagement photographer, I can tell you—cloudy skies don’t ruin a proposal. If anything, they make it better. The light was soft, the mood was cinematic, and the emotions? Completely unfiltered.

This wasn’t about perfection. It was about a couple who’s been through it all and still chooses each other. And getting to document that? That’s the part that never gets old.

Beach Proposals Hit Different

As a San Diego engagement photographer, I’ve captured love stories in golden sunlight, moody clouds, even full-blown windstorms. The truth? It’s never about the weather—it’s all about the people.
