As a Coronado family photographer, I get to meet some pretty incredible families. But when the Marcums roll into town? It’s next-level chaos—in the best way possible. Five boys. Three of them triplets. ALL of them with energy levels that make me question my own life choices (and caffeine intake).

The Marcums hail from Oregon, where the air is crisp, the trees are towering, and apparently, they raise their kids to be part stuntman, part athletes. When they booked a Coronado family photographer (that’s me!) for their beach session, I knew we were in for an adventure once again.

Family Photography at Coronado Beach – With a Side of Mayhem

We met near the Hotel del Coronado, where the sand is soft, the waves are perfect, and the light? Chef’s kiss. Ideal for a San Diego photographer who lives for all the beach magic.

Within seconds, the Marcum boys were off—running, jumping, wrestling, and doing whatever it is that five brothers do when given unlimited space and zero restrictions. Meanwhile, their parents, seasoned professionals at this whole “keeping humans alive” thing, just laughed. They knew the drill and embrace it completely. And honestly? That’s what makes for the best family photos. Real, unfiltered joy.

Why I Love Shooting Families Like the Marcums

There’s something about photographing a big, wild, perfectly imperfect family that makes my heart happy. Posed photos are great and included, but it’s the in-between moments—the sandy toes, the bear hugs, the way a dad looks at his wife like she’s the glue holding it all together—that make a session unforgettable.

And Coronado Beach? It’s the ultimate playground for this. The Marcums splashed in the waves, tackled each other in the sand, and gave me some nice posed shots too.
