A Surprise Beach Proposal La Jolla style… with a few fashionably late twists…

Daniel had a plan. A good one. The kind of thoughtful, sweeping, heart-in-your-throat plan that ends with a diamond ring and a very important question. He chose La Jolla, one of the most stunning beaches on the planet (yes, I said it, and no, I’m not exaggerating), as the place he’d ask Heather to marry him.

The scene was set. The ocean was doing its dramatic, wave-crashing thing. The light was just starting to soften into that buttery glow professional San Diego photographers dream about. I was there, camera in hand, pretending to be just another person enjoying the beach. And Daniel? He was ready. Ring in his pocket. Heart racing. Everything in place—except for one little detail.

Heather wasn’t there yet.

She was still getting ready. Because of course she was. In the truest, most relatable form of girl logic, she was planning to take beach photos with her friend—one of those cute “let’s do an Instagram shoot for fun” hangouts. So naturally, she took her time. Because when you don’t know your entire life is about to change, there’s no real rush, right?

Meanwhile, poor Daniel was trying to stay calm, waiting and pacing, heart probably doing Olympic-level gymnastics in his chest. I felt for him. He was so sweet, so ready, and so visibly nervous. I think I may have been holding my breath right along with him.

Finally, Heather arrived. Still unaware. Still thinking this was just a cute beach day with a friend.

Until she saw him.

And then—just like that—everything clicked. Daniel dropped to one knee, said all the right words, and Heather? She said yes. (Thank goodness.)

Cue the hugs and the kind of joy that makes everyone around them smile—even the random beachgoers who had no idea what they just witnessed but were cheering anyway.

After the San Diego proposal, we wandered the shoreline for some beautiful, engagement portraits. The light was perfect. Their smiles were the kind you can’t pose. And the little hiccup in the schedule? It didn’t matter one bit. Because the moment she said yes, the day became unforgettable.

Things don’t always go exactly as planned—but sometimes, the best stories start with a little delay.
