Let me tell you about Matt and his proposal that didn’t happen the way it was planned—but still turned out absolutely perfect. Matt and his high school sweetheart of nine years came down from Carlsbad for a staycation at the Hotel Del Coronado. The plan was simple: propose on the beach, followed by a magical engagement session with me, their San Diego proposal photographer. But life (and love) had other ideas.

In a last-minute change of heart (because sometimes the moment just feels too right to wait!), Matt popped the question the night before our shoot. A private, romantic moment that was all theirs, under the glow of a hazy, painterly sunset courtesy of those Southern California fires. (Heartbreaking for nature, but undeniably breathtaking.) I mean, could this guy be more thoughtful? So when it was time for me to meet them the next day, they weren’t just floating on cloud nine—they were practically orbiting the moon. Haha.

We met on the wind blown sands of Coronado beach, right by the Hotel Del. Even though I didn’t capture the actual proposal, you better believe I was there to document all the joy and love radiating from these two in the aftermath. The previous night’s “yes” was still written all over their faces.

As their San Diego engagement photographer (and low-key big fan), I had the best time capturing their love story. We wandered the beach, Matt and Jillian completely lost in each other, the way high school sweethearts often are. Her radiant-cut ring sparkled like it was showing off.
